‘There will be no leader in the team,’ Gunther Steiner clarifies Mick Schumacher will not be given number one role

Mick Schumacher, Nikita Mazepin
Team principal of Haas F1 team, Gunther Steiner has revealed his team’s Number one and Number two drivers of the year. But the catch is, according to him, there aren’t any such designated roles in Haas.
Haas F1 will be competing in their 10th year in Formula One in the 2022 season. Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin will be pairing up for a second season to drive for the American F1 team. Haas became the first team to unveil their car amongst all the constructors. The Team released the digital rendering of their 2022 car from its newly opened Design Office in Maranello, Italy.

Gunther Steiner denies any preferential treatment to Mick Schumacher

While at the 2022 car and team launch, Haas boss Steiner said he won’t be number one despite Mick’s strong performance or number two despite Mazepin’s poor performance. When asked about who is the preferred driver in the team, Steiner told Motorsport Week, “Both drivers are playing on equal terms on our team and their contracts are of equal status,”
“So no, he won’t be the leader in the team. Each weekend, the person who does the better job in practice and qualifying will be the leader. When you do that, you obviously start the race ahead and automatically put you in a better position. But at the starting point of every weekend, it will be the same: there will be no driver number one or two on the team.” said Steiner.
Mick, despite being the son of 7-time World champion and Formula One Legend Micheal Schumacher has risen through the ranks on his merit. He is a product of the Ferrari Junior driver programme and is also a reserve driver for the team. He won the 2020 Formula 2 Championship where he used to race with teammate Nikita Mazepin.
Mazepin on the other hand is the son of Russian billionaire Dimitry Mazepin who owns the company, Uralkali, which sponsors the Haas F1 team. Mazepin had finished 5th in the 2020 F2 championship and was promoted along with Mick to race for Haas. The Russian has been known for his on-field antics and brash driving.
