Mercedes issue a strong statement announcing withdrawal of FIA appeal; congratulate F1 champion, Max Verstappen

Lewis Hamilton won the first ever Qatar GP
After days of silence, Mercedes have finally clarified their stance on the entire fiasco that occurred at the Abu Dhabi GP. After announcing their intent to appeal against FIA’s decision which cost Lewis Hamilton his eighth world title, Mercedes have announced that they will be withdrawing their appeal.
Mercedes, eight time consecutive constructors champion issued a statement which started on a strong note. It stated that the manner in which the safety car was controlled in the final lap was beyond their belief, and something which shook their faith in the sport.
The statement added that with deliberation with Lewis Hamilton, the have decided to withdraw their appeal. An investigation was launched by the FIA into their own rules and regulations, after the events that took place on Sunday.
“We hereby withdraw our appeal. Together with Lewis, we have deliberated carefully over how to respond to the events at the Formula 1 season finale,” the statement read.
“We appealed in the interest of sporting fairness, and we have since been in a constructive dialogue with the FIA and Formula 1 to create clarity for the future, so that all competitors know the rules under which they are racing, and how they will be enforced,” it added.
“Thus, we welcome the decision by the FIA to install a commission to thoroughly analyse what happened in Abu Dhabi and to improve the robustness of rules, governance and decision making in Formula 1. We also welcome that they have invited the teams and drivers to take part,” Mercedes clarified.
Mercedes congratulate Max Verstappen for his maiden world title
Mercedes also congratulated Max Verstappen for claiming his maiden world championship after a blockbuster F1 season. The German giants asserted that they are here to stay, and are bracing themselves for another battle with Max Verstappen and Red Bull next season.
“We would like to express our sincere respect for your achievements this season. You made this Formula 1 Championship title fight truly epic. Max, we congratulate you and your entire team. We look forward to taking the fight to you on the track next season,” the statement added.
The statement also expressed gratitude to Valtteri Bottas for his contribution for Mercedes over the past five years. The Finnish driver will leave the Silver Arrows, making his move to Alfa Romeo. “Valtteri you have been such an important part of this team, delivering five constructors championships in five seasons. Thank you for your remarkable contribution to our motorsport history. Kiitos, Valtteri,” the statement read.
