“Before going to Mercedes, Lewis had won one championship,” Christian Horner believes a better car would give Max Verstappen an edge over Hamilton
Red Bull Racing's Team Principal Christian Horner and Max Verstappen after the latter's maiden championship win
A new rivalry that has already established itself as one for the history books is the rivalry between Mercedes’ 7-time championship winner Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull Racing’s current prodigy son Max Verstappen. This rivalry found more ground in the season of 2021 when the two drivers went head-to-head with each other in each race week. The rivalry was balanced in some way to say that it was incredibly hard for anyone to cancel out either of the two from clinching the title in the 2021 season.
The 2021 season however ended with Dutchman Max Verstappen winning his maiden championship title after a last lap miracle where he kept Hamilton at bay and denied him his record 8th championship title. However, the circumstances under which Verstappen won made the entire decision extremely controversial and the matter was put to rest to some extent with the sacking of former race director Michael Masi earlier last week.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner who has always been very vocal about his trust in the dedication of Max believes that the 24-year-old driver is currently the best in the world.
Could a better car improve Verstappen’s chances of defending his title in the 2022 season of Formula One?
In a conversation with British sports radio station talkSPORT, Christian Horner mentioned, “The car is a big factor” in reference to the importance of an effective car.
He further mentioned 7-time world championship winner Lewis Hamilton regarding the fact that before the Briton’s arrival at Mercedes which is known to produce the best cars, he had won one championship before that. “Before going to Mercedes, Lewis had won one championship”, said Horner.
“If we can give Max a car, currently he is the best driver in the world”, added Horner. Horner seemed confident about the fact that if given an effective car, there’s no stopping the man with the orange army.
However, Red Bull’s RB18 seems quite underwhelming in comparison to the Silver Arrows’ W13 challenger.
