“We are the hunters,” Toto Wolff believes Mercedes have nothing to lose in battle against Red Bull

Red Bull and Mercedes have been engaged in a tense championship battle this season. Mercedes are aiming to win their eight consecutive constructors championship title, whereas, Red Bull will look to break the dominance of the German giants.

Toto Wolff, Mercedes CEO believes that their rivalry with Red Bull this year, is similar to the one they had with Ferrari in 2018 and 2019. Going into the second half of the season in 2018, Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel led the championship standings, however, it was Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton who emerged victorious.

A similar situation occurred in 2019, when Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel led the charge for Ferrari. However, they could not inspire Ferrari towards the championship, as Mercedes reigned supreme yet again.

“This season is very intense, but also 2018 and particularly ’19 – when we were fighting Ferrari – it was very difficult at times. We were really pushing the boundaries and that also means pushing each other almost to breaking point in order to win the championship,” said Wolff.

Mercedes climbed to the top of the championship standings once again, as Lewis Hamilton finished P2 at Hungarian GP, following Sebastian Vettel’s disqualification. Mercedes have 303 points, as compared to Red Bull’s 291 points.

However, Toto Wolff believes that Mercedes have nothing to lose in the battle, as they do not have a superior car than Red Bull. “The hopes are one thing, the expectations are another thing, and the reality can be a different thing too,” he said.

I think we are the hunter, we approach this with fun – there is nothing to lose for us because we have a deficit towards our competitors, so we have just to win and continue the journey with great anticipation, enjoy every single race weekend and try to do the best possible job, and hopefully that’s enough to really compete for the championship until the very end of the season,” Wolff added.
