France had a decent run in the Group A matches and therefore finished atop the table with eight points and a goal difference of 14. In their first four matches, France brushed aside Argentina, Brazil, Germany and Spain, and looked favourites to win all matches.

However, Norway halted their winning run, taking the match 33-30. But the defeat hardly seemed to have bothered France ahead of their quarterfinal match against Bahrain. France thrashed their opponent 42-28 and will be looking for a similar showing in the semis as well.

Egypt have had a better campaign thus far, having garnered equal points, but with a goal difference of 20. They finished second in Group B below Denmark. They began their journey in the Tokyo Olympics with a 37-31 win over Portugal but went down to Denmark.

In their next three games against Japan, Sweden and Bahrain, Egypt didn’t show any complacency. In the quarter-final against Germany, Egypt carried their winning streak to four, thanks to a 31-26 triumph. Getting past France may need a stronger effort from Egypt.
