Odell Beckham Jr.’s goal of locking down a roster spot took a big hit when the New York Giants played the Miami Dolphins in the second preseason game. Beckham dropped a crucial touchdown pass.
Beckham spent the early parts of his NFL career with the G-Men before bouncing around teams. He won a Super Bowl in 2021. However, he has always wanted to earn silverware with the club that drafted him in the first round.
So, despite staying away from football for nearly eighteen months, Beckham signed a one-year contract with the Giants. The veteran wideout turned heads at the camp and was expected to pop off in preseason.
The outing did not go as OBJ had hoped. None of the quarterbacks threw him any passes, even though cameras caught him losing markers on multiple occasions. In Miami, Beckham caught 2 passes for 17 yards. In between, he squandered a great opportunity to increase his stock.
Quarterback Jameis Winston threw a dot at OBJ inside the Dolphins’ red zone, but the ball went through the Pro Bowler’s gloves and went out of bounds. Dan Duggan, the Giants beat writer with The Athletic, critiqued the drop on Twitter.
This is a good example of why the “getting open” narrative on Odell is kinda silly. All NFL receivers “get open.” Everyone is just hyper-focused on Odell. We have the broadcast highlighting him getting open while running an out against zone coverage. It’s a production business. He just hasn’t.
Duggan tweeted
Malik Nabers is the Giants’ number one receiver. Even though he’s out with an injury, his roster spot is as safe as QB Jaxson Dart. After Nabers, an entire assembly of receivers is trying their best to make the final roster cut—Calvin Austin, Darius Slayton, Darnell Mooney, Jalin Hyatt, Isaiah Hodgins, Xavier Gipson, Malachi Fields, and Braxton Berrios.

Some of them are guaranteed to miss out on roster spots. OBJ must deliver something for the Giants coaches to keep him on the team.
Odell Beckham Jr. gave his honest opinion on dropping the touchdown pass
Beckham based his NFL career on pulling off some ridiculous catches over the years. He takes pride in his athleticism.

So, dropping a confirmed touchdown pass infuriated the 33-year-old.
I’m pissed. This is the one that keeps me up at night. It’s a play I know I can make. I just felt like I was hanging so long. You take it on the chin like a man. The confidence is still there. I know I’ll make that play the next time.
Odell Beckham Jr. said via Paul Schwartz of the New York Post
He’s entitled to feel angry with himself because a few days earlier, rookie Malachi Fields caught a similar TD pass from Dart.
Head coach John Harbaugh defended OBJ. Harbaugh said Beckham did everything by the book. Even though it was a tough catch to make, Beckham got up and nearly grabbed hold of it. Unfortunately, nearly isn’t good enough for Beckham at this point in time.
I feel like if the ball is anywhere near me, if it touches my fingertips, I’m supposed to catch it.
OBJ told the Post
That drop counted very little in the final outcome. The Giants won the fixture 26-3. Winston and running back Devin Singletary each scored one rushing touchdown. Winston had 15 completions for 150 yards while third-choice Brandon Allen threw for 101 yards. Slayton caught four passes for 58 yards.
Odell Beckham Jr. was “pissed” about failing to come down with a TD catch but John Harbaugh told the Post “Making it would have just been spectacular. I looked at that play as a positive in his favor. I thought it was impressive where he was at.” https://t.co/4Yn7M2Ijay

The Giants drafted Beckham 12th overall in 2014. He was traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2019. 29 games later, the Browns shipped him to the Los Angeles Rams, with whom he won a Super Bowl ring. Stints with the Baltimore Ravens and the Miami Dolphins before hitting free agency in 2024. He remained without a club in 2025. In April 2026, Odell Beckham Jr. signed a one-year contract with the Giants.
In 10 years, Beckham has caught 575 passes for 7987 yards and scored 59 touchdowns. He has a couple of Second Team All-Pro and 3x Pro Bowl selections.
