“It is much harder to retain it”- Atthaya Thitikul SNAGS the No.1 spot in the women’s golf ranking
Atthaya Thitikul
Women’s golf has a new name at the helm as Thai teenager Atthaya Thitikul grabbed the No. 1 place in the world rankings. Women’s rankings were initiated back in 2006, thus Thitikul apparently became the 16th women golfer and second-youngest to achieve the top spot.
Atthaya’s chances of being ranked No. 1 were quite likely as she required only one win from either of her last three competitions on the LPGA Tour. However, the teenager supplanted herself at the expense of the South Korean – Jin Young Ko who wasn’t able to play owing to an injury in her left wrist.
The 19-year-old now is now heading to the Toto Japan Classic, her first tournament after being crowned with the No.1 spot. In spite of her tender age, Thitikul has a mentality and composure of a calm person as she doesn’t see this incident as an end, but as the beginning of something tough that she would have to defend with all her might.

Atthaya Thitikul is already two steps ahead in order to defend her No.1 title
“It is very special to get to the top but it is much harder to retain,” – Thitikul stated. Atthaya was playing in her first full year on the tour where pundits rated her primarily based on consistency rather than someone out of the world. With golf titles in California and Arkansas, Atthaya Thitikul has finished in the Top 10 on 12 different occasions.
In her previous year, Atthaya finished at no. 19 in the world after she won on two occasions at the Ladies European Tour. Thitikul’s luck also complimented her powerful play as she took maximum advantage of the injuries of leading players. Nelly Korda, started the year at no.1 but was sidelined for almost four months. Young Ko, the South Korean also withdrew from the BMW Ladies Championship to be hosted in her home country.
The coincidence with injuries along with Atthaya’s talent and skills paved the way for her to claim the top spot in women’s golf. Still devoid of a major, Atthaya Thitikul became the fourth player to do so. Another was Lydia Ko, who achieved the same and became the youngest ever to be crowned No.1 at just 17 years of age.
