Golf legend Barry Lane passes away at 62, Twitter pays tribute to “an absolute gentleman”

Former Ryder Cup player and winner of the Scottish Open Barry Lane has demised at the age of 62. The golfing legend passed away following a short illness. The British golfer is a five-time European Tour champion and participated in the 1993 Ryder Cup at The Belfry.

The golfing legend was one of the most famous figures in the sport. He was known for making 693 starts on the European Tour. Lane was last seen in Mauritius in December 2022 at the Legends Tour’s MCB Tour’s MCB Tour Championship.

He presented the now-renamed Barry Lane Rookie of the Year award to the Brazilian golfer Adilson Da Silva. The golfing world is grief struck by his untimely demise and has started pouring in their love and condolences for the departed’s family.

Imminent golfing personalities pour their condolences for Barry Lane

Barry Lane’s untimely demise has struck the golfing community with immense grief. Lane was a part of Bernard Gallacher’s Ryder Cup team, which faced a narrow 15-13 defeat against the United States in 1993. Furthermore, Lane is also remembered for his run at the Scottish Open, where he beat a solid field, including Masters champion Sandy Lyle in 1988. 

Some of the imminent personalities of the sport have reacted to Lane’s demise. Keith Pelley, the group chief executive of the European Tour, says, “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Barry Lane”.” 

Pelley recognizes the immense contributions made by Lane to the sport and noted, “To have seen such level of success across both the European Tour and now the Legends Tour shows his dedication to the game of golf and he was a much-loved figure on both tours.” 

The Legend’s Tour Rookie of the Year trophy was recently renamed ‘The Barry Lane Rookie of the Year’ trophy in December 2022. Pelley acknowledged the same, commenting, “The renaming of the Legends Tour’s Rookie of the Year trophy in his honour is a fitting tribute, and I’m delighted he had the opportunity to present it.” 

The golf community on Twitter is also deeply saddened by this undue loss of an imminent personality. Golf News Magazine writes, “R.I.P. Barry Lane, an absolute gentleman. You will be missed by all the golfing community.”  The sad demise of Barry Lane comes just a few days after soccer legend Pele’s passing. Here is how the fans are reacting to this news on Twitter.
