“Don’t have sympathy for anybody that cheats”- When Cameron Smith gave Patrick Reed the IRKSOME RESPONSE he DESERVED
Patrick Reed and Cameron Smith
Back in 2019, Patrick Reed could not convince Cameron Smith with reason publicized by him for the two-stroke penalty in the Hero World Challenge. Patrick was recorded pushing the mound of sand behind the ball while practicing a golf swing, before taking his shot. Reed said that the camera angle was unfortunately not in his favor and his intentions were clear.
Cameron Smith could not side with the American Golfer, “If you make a mistake maybe once, you could maybe understand, but to give a bit of a bull—- response like the camera angle … that’s pretty up there (inexcusable),” Cameron Smith told the Press.
“I know Pat pretty good and he’s always been nice to me, so I don’t want to say anything bad about him, but anyone cheating the rules, I’m not up for that,” Smith said. “I don’t have any sympathy for anyone that cheats.” Added Cameron Smith.
Rory McIlroy, contradictory to Cameron Smith, backed Patrick Reed over the complication
“You try to give the player the benefit of the doubt. He’s in there and he’s trying to figure out what way to play the shot and he’s moved some sand so it is a penalty.” Said Rory McIlroy.
Rory McIlroy added, “I don’t think the intent is there. But it’s also very hard for me to believe he didn’t feel what he was doing. It’s a hard one. I would never like to think anybody was intentionally improving their lie……but there’s an obliviousness to it, almost like it’s his pre-shot routine.”
“I don’t think it would be a big deal if it wasn’t Patrick Reed. I think, it’s almost like, a lot of people within the game, it’s almost like a hobby to kick him while it’s down. If it wasn’t Patrick Reed, it wouldn’t be getting quite so much attention…it’s going to make things really difficult down in Australia for him.”
