When he arrived at the LIV golf scene, 52-year-old American golfer Phil Mickelson was arguably the most talked-about name in the Saudi Arabia-backed league. However, that status might have taken a beating on Friday after British Open champion Cameron Smith and his team beat Mickelson’s side in the LIV Golf Team Championship.

Competition will continue in the team contest with eight teams contesting the semifinal round on Saturday. Four winning teams from the semifinals will advance to the finals to be played on Sunday. The tournament is being held at the iconic Trump National Doral stadium in Miami, where ex-President Donald Trump is also due to feature in an invitational closed-for-public event later this month.

Each player of the winning team stands the chance to take home a cool cheque of $4 million dollars.

Trump wishes to promote LIV Golf as the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV golf may have just done enough this year to come close to the success of PGA, at least in terms of viewership and the kind of money it now commands, even though it doesn’t still have a broadcast deal in place.

According to recent reports, the league will be officially rebranded as the LIV Golf League next year with the last invitational event of 2022 scheduled to be held from Oct. 28-30 at Trump National Doral in Miami where former president Trump will himself be competing, albeit without spectators.

Next year, 14 events are already planned to be held as part of the LIV Golf League with the same 54-hole and no cut format.

Interestingly, the news that is also doing the rounds in the golfing circuit is that – the Saudi-backed league LIV Golf recently tried to lure Tiger Woods into joining them for a mindboggling fees between $700 million to $800 million.

If the deal works out, it will be a great feather in the cap for LIV and potentially the arrow that will pierce the PGA Tour’s heart leading to its ultimate death. Considering some of the big names that are playing for LIV already and the kind of viewership it is getting on its YouTube live streams, the former won’t be a foregone conclusion.
