“Won’t be teeing up this week”: Cameron Smith withdraws from BMW Championship amidst health concerns and LIV Rumours

The FedEx St. Jude Championship have not turned out to be the most successful for Cameron Smith. After being a hot favourite and in great contention to win the Championship, a penalty derailed his plans severely. Smith ended up finishing only T13, however he remains No. 3 in the FedEx standings. Unfortunately the bad news is not stopping for Smith, who has decided to withdraw from the BMW Championships coming soon.

Smith is in the middle of his most successful season, winning both the Players Championship and the Open this year. While he aims to keep the season going, a hip injury means that he cannot move forward in the BMW Championship. However, the golfer is currently in a comfortable spot in the rankings, therefore he is expected to make the Tour Championship regardless or not.

According to his Bud Martin, Smith’s decision to not compete in the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware didn’t mean he wasn’t planning to play in the season-ending Tour Championship, scheduled for Aug. 25-28 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. “Unfortunately, Cam will be unable to compete in the BMW Championship this week in Wilmington DE. He has been dealing with some on and off hip discomfort for several months and thought it best he rest this week in his pursuit of the FedEx Cup,” Martin said in the statement.

The news comes after Cameron Smith’s controversial 2 stroke penalty at the St. Jude Championship. While Smith could have taken the title, it went to Will Zalatoris instead, who after a wild playoff with Sepp Straka, finally racked his first PGA Tour win. Smith on the other hand has also been rumoured to join LIV Golf.
