Renowned golf star Phil Mickelson has done many things in his life. He is a multi-time PGA Tour winner, a six-time major champion, and has established himself as one of the greats of the game. However, many do not feel the same way about him. Several stars have previously called him out for his behavior and attitude.
A former PGA Tour player Frank Nobilo has now joined the list. The American golfer was one of the big names on the tour when the major announcement of LIV Golf was made. At first, it seemed the idea of launching a new league would fail as no one would join them. The exact opposite of it transpired as several big guns left the tour.
Mickelson was one of those. He is even credited by many with aiding the Saudis in creating the league. The now-turned-analyst Frank Nobilo has admitted to being saddened by the antics of Phil Mickelson. The Kiwi golfer claimed he was shocked to see the dual personalities of the 45-time PGA Tour winner.
I look at that Phil - as a contemporary as well; I played a lot against him - that I admire his skill and ability. And then I see the statesman role, which is really what it is now, and it's very disastrous. It saddens me.Frank Nobilo
Frank Nobilo claims golfers are overpaid compared to other sports
When compared to other sports, golf might have less popularity. However, one reason where they are ranked higher than some sports is the money. The money involved in golf is said to be one of the highest. The likes of Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods both feature in the top ten highest-paid stars. However, Frank Nobilo believes that golfers are overpaid.
While speaking at the Five Clubs podcast, Nobilo said it was one thing that no one on the PGA Tour or LIV wanted to admit. He was quoted by Golf.com.
They don’t want to say it...Golfers are overpaid compared to every other sport.Frank Nobilo
Given that he was a former golfer, this might surprise everyone. While there could be some debates from experts regarding this, there is no denying that the money involved in golf is significantly higher than in some sports.
One recent example of this involves Viktor Hovland. The Norwegian star had a memorable year and he capped it off with back-to-back wins at the BMW and Tour Championships. As he won the FedEx Cup, he pocketed a huge sum of $18 million, taking his total winnings for this year between $20 and $25 million.
Meanwhile, LIV Golf is funded by the PIF of Saudi Arabia. They are known across the world for splashing huge amounts of cash, which was also seen when several PGA Tour members left to play for them. What will be the reaction to this statement from Nobilo now remains to be seen.
