“If we can send rockets to moon and bring them back”- Rory McIlroy says truce between PGA, LIV golf possible

Ace golfer Rory McIlroy recently floated the idea of a possible truce between ever-fighting golf groups PGA Tour and LIV golf, saying that if humans could send rockets to the moon and bring them back, this, too, was plausible.

“Right now with two lawsuits going on, and how heightened the rhetoric has been, I think we just need to let it cool off a little bit,” McIlroy told BBC Sport.

“If we can send rockets to the moon and bring them back again and have them land on their own I’m sure we can figure out how to make professional golf cohesive again,” added the Northern Irishman.

Roy McIlroy takes a U-turn

In recent times, McIlroy was one of the biggest names to have continuously spoken against the Saudi-backed LIV golf league. However, it seems that reduced opportunities for players in general have resulted in golf becoming the sufferer in the business war.

Recently, McIlroy made a U-turn from his regular stance when he suggested that LIV golf players be allowed OWGR ranking points, which could pave their entry into the world rankings as well as major golfing tournaments in the future.

Mcllroy says it is undoubtedly difficult for the golfers to move forward without proper rankings and that he himself wrote to the Official World Golf Ranking Chairperson Peter Dawson, saying, “every week that passes without the inclusion of LIV athletes undermines the historical value of OWGR.’’

“If Dustin Johnson is somehow 100th in the world it’s not an accurate reflection of where he is in the game,’’ Mcllroy told BBC adding, “at the same time, you can’t make up your own rules. There are criteria there, everyone knows what they are, and if they want to pivot to meet the criteria they can.”

I’ve no problem with them getting ranking points at all but you have to meet the criteria. If you don’t it’s harder to justify why you should have them.’’ stated Rory as he voiced his concerns for the well-being of the sport.

LIV golf right now only partially qualifies to be a part of the OWGR and the application might take some time to process, maybe even a year.
