As the world adjusts to the new normal, the world of sports is also making its way toward changes to keep up with the times. According to a recent interview with Jack Nicklaus, a renowned golfer, he discussed his perspective on the forthcoming changes to the PGA Tour.
Nicklaus emphasized that the changes would result in Pebble Beach receiving higher status, the Tour heading to Mexico before the Florida swing, and the Honda Classic featuring stronger fields.
The only Tour event that takes place in South Florida is the Honda Classic and is known for attracting high-quality golfers. This year, none of the top 17 players in the world ranking participated in the Honda Classic.
However, Nicklaus stated that a revised schedule in 2024 could enable the Honda Classic to attract higher-ranked players despite its lack of title sponsorship.
Nicklaus, who has deep charitable ties to the Honda Classic, also mentioned that the event has raised millions for the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. While he acknowledges that the town has supported the event without a great field.
He believes that the upcoming changes to the PGA Tour schedule will bring more players to the event. As the PGA Tour continues to evolve, Nicklaus remains optimistic that the Honda Classic will continue to thrive and maintain its position as a top event on the Tour.
Changes to the PGA Tour and stronger fields for the Honda Classic

On Sunday’s final round at PGA National, Jack Nicklaus made an appearance and shared his insights on the changes that the PGA Tour is undergoing, including the size of fields and eligibility.
The PGA Tour is currently in the process of reworking its schedule for 2024, which may involve the Saudi-funded LIV Golf posing a potential threat. A formal announcement for the 2024 schedule is anticipated in the summer. Nicklaus revealed that the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational at Riviera will become elevated tournaments in the coming year with $20 million purses, whereas the WM Phoenix Open would no longer have that status.
As mentioned, the Honda Classic has not attracted top-ranked golfers in recent years. But Nicklaus believes that the 2024 schedule changes will make the event more attractive to golfers.
According to him, In 2024, the event will still mark the beginning of the Florida swing, and with the stronger field, it will attract more fans and create a more competitive atmosphere. Nicklaus also mentioned that the town has been supportive of the event, even without a strong field, and he has never personally asked players to participate in the tournament.
