Following the stunning announcement regarding the golf merger in June, the future of the sport has been a debatable topic. Fans were left shocked in their tracks when the PGA Tour announced an agreement with LIV Golf. Commissioner Jay Monahan has once again expressed his confidence in the deal and going through.
A few days after the deal was announced, the framework agreement between the tours surfaced up online. The memo discussed several key points including the changes which are expected to take place. One issue that Monahan and his team faces are to reach a final agreement. He was seen speaking at a press conference recently where he admitted of confident moving forward.
The announcement of the merger had gone down well with the audience. Monahan would soon find himself on the receiving end of a huge backlash from the fans. This only intensified further when he took a sudden medical leave after dropping this hue bombshell of a development.
“I am confident that we will reach an agreement that achieves a positive outcome for the PGA Tour and our fans,” Monahan said in his presser. The 53-year-old has time till the end of the year to get him and his team to reach a total final agreement with the PIF. If they are unable to do, the plans of the merger could see several changes.
Jay Monahan makes bold claim that Tour players are not invested in other leagues
One of the major talking points in golf in the past two years has been the formation of LIV Golf. The tour helped by the funds from PIF of Saudi Arabia has taken the world by storm. Their establishment saw many players abandon the PGA Tour and play for them. Jay Monahan has taken a silent dig at the LV defectors and claimed that tour players are more invested in them than in playing for other leagues.
“Our athletes are more invested in the PGA Tour than other leagues,” Monahan said. This could come in response to the bold claim of Phil Mickelson. The LIV Golfer had recently claimed that no LIV player was interested in playing for the PGA Tour.
Monahan had previously stated that those who left will be given a chance to come back to the tour. The same was even stated in the framework agreement released. Whether LIV Golfers will actually be interested in doing so remains to be seen.
Players like Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson had stated that they are happy with where they are and are likely to stick with LIV Golf. As the players gear for the final few events of the year, the merger of the golf will continue to divert their attention.
