Jon Rahm wants PGA and DP World Tour to have a common consensus for LIV players at Ryder Cup

Spanish golfer Jon Rahm has been one of the harshest and most vocal critics of LIV players. In one of his recent statements, he demands a common consensus between the PGA and Europe’s DP World Tour on the LIV players participating in the Ryder Cup.

The Ryder Cup is one of the oldest and most prestigious golf tournaments, operational since 1927. The bilineal golf tournament is competed between teams from the United States and Europe, with top-ranking golfers participating in it.

The PGA Tour has sanctioned all the players joining the rebel LIV circuit. This means a complete ban on participating in the PGA Tours and US-hosted Majors. However, Europe’s DP Tour is yet to decide on LIV players’ eligibility to play in the Ryder Cup. Spaniard Jon Rahm, in his statements, wants both PGA and DP Tour to come to a consensus on the LIV players.

In his previous statements, Jon Rahm has been highly critical and vocal against the LIV players. Along with Billy Horschel, Rahm had even called the LIV players participating in the BMW PGA Championship ‘hypocrites’ and ‘displaying double standards.’

Now, Rahm thinks it would be unfair for some teams to have LIV players and others to have not. In his statement at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, he said, “There’s some people that are going to make tough choices, right? A little bit of that is out of my reach. I hope the PGA of America and European Tour make a decision together. ”

The Saudi Arabia government’s Public Investment Fund sponsors the LIV Golf Circuit. Many critics have suggested that this is a deliberate move by Saudi Arabia to engage in sports washing.

Sports-washing is the term used for countries involving or using sports as a medium to whitewash their reputation in the international forum. In the case of Saudi Arabia, critics say that the country is using this agenda to improve its reputation on allegations of its human rights record.

In his statement at the Sentry TOC, Rahm seems eager for the rivalry between PGA and LIV to stop affecting the sport. He wants the young players of Europe to get a good chance at one of the most prestigious tournaments. Citing the example of a young US team in Ryder Cup 2021, he says, Even if they decide not to on that side, I think it’s going to give an opportunity for a lot of great young players to show up and have the chance in Europe. It’s just going to be an opportunity for all of them. ”

The Ryder Cup for 2023 is scheduled to be played from September 26 to October 1 in Rome. This time, the Europen Tour is looking forward to gaining a remarkable comeback after their defeat against the United States at Whistling Straits in 2021.
