Rory McIlroy is once again the Masters Tournament champion. The World No.2 successfully defended the title with a 1-shot victory on Sunday. Following his historic back-to-back success, the golfer paid a heartfelt tribute to his parents.
The Northern Irish entered the event this year as the reigning champion with one major goal in mind. He wanted to put the green jacket on himself once again and claim successive wins in this major championship.
The title defense started well for him. Following scores of 67 and 65 in the opening two rounds, he established a 6-shot lead and seemed to be running away with the title.
A little stumble and huge moves from the chasers on the moving day saw his lead vanish. He entered the final round tied at the top of the standings alongside Cameron Young, who shot an incredible 65 to surge into contention.
After a birdie on the 3rd hole, he ran into trouble with a double bogey on the 4th hole. He then made another bogey on the 6th hole and was suddenly under pressure.
The golfer, however, was able to bounce back. Back-to-back birdies on Holes 7 and 8 saw him finish the front nine at even par. Successive birdies on Holes 12 and 13 would put him 2-under par and open a 2-shot lead.
On the final hole, his tee shot would first hit a tree while his second shot landed in the bunker. He though, then made an incredible chip shot on the third attempt and set up a two-putt to win. With a bogey on the final hole, he finished 1-shot ahead of runner-up Scottie Scheffler and repeated as champion.

Following his victory, McIlroy would pay tribute to his family. His parents, Gerry and Rosie McIlroy, were not at the Augusta National last year when he won his maiden title and completed the career grand slam.
This year, they were present in Georgia to see their son make history and repeat as champion. During the green jacket ceremony, the 36-year-old broke down a bit while talking about his parents and expressed his gratitude for their support.
I want to say a few ‘thank yous’ to the people on my left…first and foremost, my wife and daughter, Erica and Poppy. … Mum and dad…I owe everything to you. You’re the most wonderful parents. If I could be half the parent to Poppy as you were to me, then I know I’ve done a good job.
Rory McIlroy said

Rory McIlroy claims winning the Masters Tournament is difficult
It was the year of Rory McIlroy at the Augusta National once again. The golfer was able to retain his title with a gritty performance in the final round. He later expressed that winning the Masters Tournament is actually difficult.

Until last year, McIlroy had never won at the Augusta National. In his quest to become a grand slam champion, he suffered several heartbreaks.
He finally overcame his demons of this course last year as he edged out Justin Rose in a playoff round to win his maiden title. This saw him complete the career grand slam and win all 4 majors.
While speaking with the reporters at the start of his press conference, the golfer claimed to believe that winning the Masters last year was difficult as he was chasing the career grand slam. He has now realized that winning this tournament is, in fact, not easy.
I thought it was so difficult to win last year because of trying to win the Masters and the Grand Slam. This year I realized it’s just really difficult to win the Masters.
Rory McIlroy told the reporters
"I thought it was so difficult to win last year because of trying to win the Masters AND the Grand Slam…"

McIlroy became the first player to repeat as champion in this event since Tiger Woods in 2002. He also became just the 4th golfer after Woods, Sir Nick Faldo (1989, 1990) and Jack Nicklaus (1965, 1966) to claim successive wins in this competition.
