The 2023 Players Championship is turning out to be one of the most unexpected and fresh events in a long time. The field has been overturned, and nothing can be said about who will take the win. Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and all other top golfers have been massively struggling at the tournament, which comes as a surprise.
South African golfer Christiaan Bezuidenhout currently holds the lead going into the second round. He is one stroke clear of Adam Svensson and two strokes clear of Min Woo Lee and Colin Morikawa. As the field gets ready for another tough day, there is no more good news for Jon Rahm.
The current World no. 1 Jon Rahm has withdrawn from the Players Championship 2023. He has retired prior to the second round citing stomach illness. He was on the range, but said he could not go out further after finishing the warming up stage. Rahm was set to tee off with Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy at 12:56pm EST.
With Jon Rahm out of the game, can Scottie Scheffler or Rory McIlroy take his World no. 1 spot?
With Rahm stepping down from the Championship, the other 2 now have a chance to overtake him for world no. 1. Scheffler needs to finish in a three way tie for fifth with McIlroy finishing worse than eighth. For McIlroy, he needs to finish with a two way tie for eighth and Scheffler needs to finish worse than 3 way tied fifth.
The last time Rahm withdrew from a tournament was at the 2021 Memorial tournament. He was forced to withdraw after testing positive for Covid-19. Rahm has already won 3 times this season, and shot a 71 in the opening round of the Players Championship. Now, the Top rank for the FedEx Cup is also up for grabs.
Max Homa is the only player who can beat Rahm in the FedEx Cup rankings. Rahm has finished in the top 10 in six of his seven starts this season, including the 3 wins he has had. He became the first person since Johnny Miller in 1975 to claim three titles before the beginning of March in the season.
We do not know when Rahm will tee it up next. His next conventional appearance should be at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play at Austin Country Club. Till then, we hope he has a speedy recovery!
