South Korean golfer Joohyung Kim aka Tom has scripted his name into the record books with an extraordinary first triumph on the PGA Tour in the Wyndham Championship. The Seoul native Kim, who started the week with a quadruple-bogey eight on his opening hole, rebounded to shoot 67 and added rounds of 64, 68 and 61 to finish 20 under par at Greensboro’s Sedgefield Country Club in North Carolina.

Kim, 20, is now the second youngest winner on the PGA Tour since 1932. He made six birdies and an eagle in a front nine of 27. In the end, birdies on the 15th and 16th helped him seal a five-shot win over compatriot American golfer John Huh (67) and Sungjae Im (68).

“Hey guys, it’s Joohyung Kim here. I go by Tom. I just want to say thank you to all the PGA Tour fans for supporting me this week. You know, it’s been an amazing road and, to be a first-time winner, it’s an incredible honour. And I hope to see all the fans around the world in the US. So, thank you guys again for the support. Appreciate it,” Kim said in a video message for his fans and supporters after Sunday’s round.

As many as four players have previously in the last 40 seasons (since hole-by-hole tracking began), made a quadruple bogey during a win on the PGA Tour. However, nobody had opened the tournament with one.

“I stayed very patient this week,” Kim told CBS Sports. “After that quad, once I started to laugh it off I was in a better mental state.
“Instead of getting angry and depressed I stayed in the moment and I can’t believe I won with a quadruple bogey on the first hole. Hopefully, that doesn’t happen again but it’s definitely a week that I will remember forever.”
