“LIV Golf is an irrational threat”: Jay Monahan slams Series as ‘anti-growth’ of golf

The newly inaugurated LIV Golf series has caused quite the tension in the golf world, leaving a lot of controversy. As many golfers are slowly making the switch from the PGA Tour to LIV Series, several people have their ideas and opinions as to what to make of this split that the golf world seems to be experiencing. PGA Tour’s Jay Monahan is defending his own, saying that the LIV Series is detrimental to the growth of golf.

“I am not naïve. If this is an arms race and if the only weapons here are dollar bills, the PGA Tour can’t compete,” said Monahan according to foxnews.com. The PGA Tour could not possibly compete with a foreign monarchy that was spending billions of dollars in an attempt to ‘buy’ the game of golf, he added.

“We welcome good, healthy competition. The LIV Saudi golf league is not that. It’s an irrational threat, one not concerned with the return on investment or true growth of the game,” added Monahan. However, this does seem to have had an impact on the workings of the PGA Tour. A growth in the prize money as well as talks of media rights since 2020 seems to have accelerated, considering the threat of LIV Series.

“If you’re good enough, you will rise to the top,” Monahan said. “And if you don’t continue to earn that top spot, someone else as hungry and as talented is right there to take your place. Again, that’s the unique beauty of what the tour has and always will offer to fans. It’s damn good and it’s worth fighting for.”
