“The silence is deafening”: LIV Golf antitrust lawsuit trial date against PGA Tour all set… in 2024

LIV Golf vs. PGA Tour

The LIV Golf series has been causing quite the controversy since its inception. The Saudi-backed series has seen a lot of players make the switch for large amounts of money, making the entire situation all the more sensitive. The PGA Tour has issued sanctions and suspensions against the defectors, who have already played three events for the rebel tour.

Recently, 11 golfers led by Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA. This also included a TRO filed by Talor Gooch, Matt Jones and Hudson Swafford to play in the FedEx Cup Playoffs- which the LIV Series lost. However, the upcoming trial will be an important one in deciding the fate of professional golf.

On Thursday U.S. District Judge Beth L. Freeman set a tentative date for a summary hearing on 23rd July 2023, where the Tour will push to dismiss the case. The original date for the hearing was set to be on 7th August 2023, however golfers faced a set back as those dates coincided with the beginning of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

The final trial date is now ready to begin on 8th January, 2024. The documents regarding the hearing also seem to say that more than 1 golfers have dropped out of the lawsuit. Originally, it was known that Carlos Ortiz had dropped himself from the lawsuit, however it is reported that one more golfer had dropped out.

In the 105 page document, the LIV Golfers are attempting to fight the suspension of the PGA Tour.  The tour on the other hand is adamant it has the legal authority to issue disciplinary measures. The drama between the LIV series and the PGA Tour will not be over anytime soon, as the golf world prepares for a big storm incoming. The best that they can hope is for a middle ground so that golfers can focus on the sport once again.
