“BATTLE of LAWSUITS?”- LIV Golf vs PGA Tour intensifies as DOJ tightens its screws on Augusta National Golf Club
LIV Golf vs PGA Tour
LIV Golf has been badgering the PGA Tour ever since its inception into the golfing world. Developing itself into a new pole of golf, LIV has unquestionably rattled the PGA. The premier golfing body because of its lackluster approach has been hit hard by the Saudi-PIF-backed cash-rich golfing circuit which has managed to sway away some star golfers from under its nose.
In another setback for the PGA, the DOJ antitrust division which placed the PGA Tour under scrutiny back in July is again in the news as the scope of their investigation has widened. Agents representing the players have received a rather stern inquiry regarding the Tour’s bylaws which resemble players’ involvement in events that are not sanctioned by the PGA Tour.
What we have learned more about the matter is that several groups with Augusta National Golf Club in particular which administers the Masters every year are under investigation. Although it has submitted relevant documents to the DOJ, Augusta National as a golf club has a rather penchant reputation for its secretive nature.
LIV Golf gets an unusual friend in the form of the DOJ
USGA, the apex governing body for sports in the U.S., which also manages the U.S. Open has to open itself up for investigation, as told by a USGA personnel. “The USGA intends to fully comply with any and all requests” – says the spokesperson. Similar treatment has been given to The PGA of America, the body which manages the PGA Championship. Although it has refrained from making any comments unlike its counterpart – the USGA.
The embattled golfing circuits are also fighting a war outside golf too. LIV Golf is actively involved in an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA. To be fair, the LIV players initiated the lawsuit but whether it was on their own behest or LIV’s is still unknown. The LIV definitely has not left any stone unturned in its fight with the PGA Tour, and why not – they technically have the financial backing of a whole nation.
Currently, it seems that the PGA tour is in turmoil but looking at their response and counteraction, the PGA feels quite confident that they’ll be able to weather the storm. One thing is for sure, these lawsuits will get dragged down with time, but eventually who ends up on top is not yet clear.
