European tour players seem to have divided opinions on LIV defectors joining the 2023 Ryder Cup Team selection. Matt Fitzpatrick openly stated that he doesn’t mind having the LIV players on the list next fall. Matt went on to elaborate that he would love for the European team can field the best 12 players possible for a team.
Jon Rahm has also taken the same side, stating that he would like to have a player like Sergio Gracia on the team. While these players have expressed their opinion about the batch, Rory McIlory and Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald made separate decisions.
Rory has always been a critic of the Saudi-backed tour, so it’s common he’ll not spread out his arms to welcome them. He clearly mentioned how much he didn’t want the LIV players should not be on the team of Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome in 2023.

Matt Fitzpatrick who also has his eyes on Sergio Gracia noted in a statement, “I think there definitely are a few personal relationships that have been dented by this. I’m not bothered, I just want to win, and I’m sure those boys do too”.
“I’m happy to share a room with him, if that’s going to be the case, I can corner him off for everyone else.” Players who decided to jump ship in 2022 to LIV are Gracia, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Graeme McDowell, and Henrik Stenson.
The internet’s been on fire after Stenson lost his Ryder Cup captaincy position of 2023 in July. Fitzpatrick pointed out regarding his jump, “It was a tough one because (Stenson) had started gearing up for Rome, making notes and putting plans together,” “And then it’s like, ‘sorry, lads, I’m off.’”
“As long as you go and don’t come back, I don’t have an issue,” Fitzpatrick said of players who made the move to LIV. “Go take the money, go play wherever you want, I could not care less, just don’t come back and then take spots from other guys that want to play.”
“I understand that there’s the likes of Westy, Poulter and Sergio that have played a lot in Europe over the years and have done their bit, and they have”. “I can’t ever knock them for that, they’ve done way more than I have for the European Tour.”
Fitzpatrick was also caught up in the LIV golf controversy. He was rumored to take a liking to the Saudi-funded tour and may change greens.
Although none of those rumors turned out to be true, as he blatantly dismissed them. Unfortunately, his open statement about the LIV players may have rubbed a few people on his own team in the wrong way.
