From a reduced field to no-cut tournaments, PGA Tour introduces EXTREME changes to 2024 season

PGA TOUR

The PGA Tour is known for its old ways- its traditions that it has built up over the last hundreds of years. It has seen many golfers come and go. However, it has stayed true to itself, its institution and its thoughts. But now, things are about to change for the 2024 season. This change may as well be because of the new LIV Golf series, that threatened the PGA Tour last year.

The PGA Tour is known to be brutal, with 150 golfers having to fight it out every weekend to be above the line of cuts. Now, the new face of the PGA Tour will not have these rules. These new rules come in addition to the fact that the PGA Tour has increased its prize money payouts this year, and they will increase next year too.

The PGA Tour will now remove the 36-hole cut that is has long implemented. Instead of the cut, the overall player field will now be reduced to only 70 to 78 players at most. However, these changes will not affect all events. The Majors, the Players Championship and the FedEx Tournament will still hold onto the bigger field with the cuts.

This year, changes were made to the field to accommodate the biggest golf players in the world. This includes an increase in the prize money payouts of each event. The prizes has been a total of almost $20 million per event, which is more than the years leading up to 2023.

However, it is to be noted that the reason for these sudden changes might have actually been the LIV Golf series. The LIV Series stormed onto the scene last year as a new prospect in the world of golf. It got some of the biggest players for large amounts of money. They also introduced a new format, which now the PGA Tour seems to have caught on to.

The LIV Series was the first to come up with the no-cut event. Along with that they also made their overall course size shorter, with only 54 holes. They also introduced the never seen before team style play, which has added quite a bit of fun the events. The inclusion of shorts in the dress code is also something much appreciated by players.

However, the tension is not letting up anytime soon. The PGA Tour is very hesitant to accept the LIV Golf series. The consequences have been seen as players who defected to the LIV Series are now allowed to play on the PGA TOUR anymore. However, it is still interesting to consider the fact that the LIV Series might actually be the start of something new.
