As the 2023 U.S. Open inches closer, the feeling of uncertainty among golfers regarding the future is clearly felt. A week after the major announcement of the merger between PGA-LIV was made official, various questions have risen up. While several big names have since spoken about their feeling and thoughts, some have decided to stay silent; one of them is Phil Mickelson.
The veteran golfer who is due to turn 53 on Friday, June 16, has not made an official statement. This led the fans and experts curious. Before this whole scenario regarding the merger, Mickelson was actively involved in praising LIV Golf and defending it. He also found himself caught up in various Twitter spats with Brandel Chamblee and Eamon Lynch of Golf Channel.
Following the announcement of the merger between the tours, Mickelson did take a swipe at the moment. He took to his Twitter and reposted the news with a caption “Awesome day today.” Since then he has stayed quiet on the whole matter. He also did not have an official press conference before the tournament, so it will be interesting to hear his thoughts when he decides to speak.
The Lefty has enjoyed a memorable career that has seen him grab six major championships. However, the U.S. Open crown has always eluded him. Mickelson will enter the tournament with history in his sights. A win at the Los Angeles Country Club (LACC) this weekend will see him complete the elusive grand slam.

Ever since the jaw-dropping news in connection with the partnership between the PGA tour and LIV Golf broke out, users turned around to see the player’s reactions. While Phil Mickelson might have launched a silent attack with a three-word tweet, he has decided to keep his mouth close for the moment. The golfer did praise the venue for the upcoming tournament though.
In his first official tweet since the shocking development, Mickelson offered a few words of approval to the event venue. “LACC is one of the best courses in the world and is setup in spectacular fashion. This will be an exciting US Open for both players and fans,” he tweeted before adding that he cannot wait for the tour to get started.
According to Golf Magazine, Mickelson stated that he has no interest to talk about the controversial PGA-LIV merger ahead of the U.S. Open, “I just don’t want to waste any energy on it at the beginning of the week.” Even if he has “plenty of thoughts” to share on the deal, he’ll do that later.
As per reports, this will be the first time that the LACC plays hosts to a major event. Meanwhile, Mickelson will be teeing with Keegan Bradley and Padraig Harrington. His last major victory came in 2021 at the PGA Championship. Will the HyFlyers GC captain finally end the drought and achieve immortality? The answer to this will likely come by this weekend.
