After starting the competition in some style, Team Europe lost a little edge towards the end of Day 2. Timely performances from several members, including Patrick Cantlay, saw Team USA finish the day with some momentum on their side. While there was plenty of action to talk about from the day, one development stole the headlines as Rory McIlroy got into a heated conversation with a US caddie in the parking lot at the Ryder Cup.
Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick would end up losing the last game to Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark. During the final moments of the game, caddie Joe LaCava was spotted waving his hats, in reference to a rumor that Cantlay had refused to wear a hat during the event. All of this commotion saw the North Irishman and his English partner lose composure as Cantlay made his putt in the hole to give his team a fighting chance.
As McIlroy made his way towards his car, he spotted someone. The unidentified person could very well be LaCava, as the golfer would immediately rage upon seeing him. The four-time major champion could be heard using offensive words.
“It’s a f*****g disgrace,” McIlroy could be heard saying while adding that he cannot get away with it. The four-time major champion would point out his finger in anger while he was dragged back into his car by his wife and his teammate Shane Lowry.

Luke Donald shares his thoughts on the incident involving Rory McIlroy
The stakes are obviously very high at the moment. The Ryder Cup is one of the most prestigious events in the sport of golf. Every player wants to win this competition to claim the bragging rights. However, players also have to be respectable and control their emotions in tough times. Rory McIlroy was seemingly dissatisfied by the tactics of caddie Joe LaCava. He would lose his cool and get involved in a huge commotion. His Captain, Luke Donald, has backed him in this fight.
The 40-year-old team captain would point out that he saw the antics of LaCava at the end. He also mentioned that he had already spoken with McIlroy on the matter. “I saw it unfold when Patrick made that putt. Joe was waving his hat… I talked to Rory. He politely asked Joe to move aside. He was in his line of vision,” he was quoted by the Guardian. The skipper further added, “He stood there and didn’t move for a while and continued to wave the hat, so Rory was upset about that.”
LaCava joined Cantlay at the start of May after he and Tiger Woods went their separate ways. Before that, he had been serving the golf great for twelve years. The question on the minds of golf fans is: was this a tactical move by LaCava to help out Cantlay and his nation? The answer to that remains to be seen as the action on Day 3 unfolds soon.
