The LIV Golf Series is going through its fair bit of struggles recently, especially as it tries to secure its place in the Official World Golf Ranking points. Rory McIlroy, however, is less than sympathetic of the situation, saying the the Series brought it upon themselves.

All participants in the LIV Series, including the likes of Cameron Smith and Bryson DeChambeau, are currently sliding down the world leaderboard as the series is not being considered for the OWGR Points just yet. This means they may miss out on the 4 Majors and qualifying for the 2024 Olympics.

“The only ones that are prohibiting them for getting world rankings points are themselves,” McIlroy said rather harshly when asked about the situation. “It’s not as if they [the OWGR] created this criteria out of thin air a few months ago to try to prevent LIV [players] from getting points,” he was quoted by BBC as saying.

“They knew the risks going in, and actions have consequences. That was a risk that they were paid for ultimately,” said McIlroy. “If some of these guys that don’t have exemptions in the majors don’t qualify for them, I have no problem with that because they knew that going in.”

The OWGR board is currently considering the LIV Golf Series to be a part of the point system. A few things however stand in the way. These include the battle with the PGA Tour, the 54-hole format and the no cut weekends at tournaments. Yet, they stand a chance to be a part of the points when the decision is made.
