With the prestigious U.S. Open on the horizon, there is a sense of uncertainty between the players participating. The shocking merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf has shaken the foundation of golf. While a number of players have made their voices heard, one particular star has not spoken anything yet, that player is Tiger Woods.
Woods has become synonymous with the word golf over the years. His silence on this topic has raised concerns among fans and several experts. The golf great has been sidelined for a long time now due to injuries. As a result of this, he is not participating in this year’s tournament. However, 15 years ago in 2008, he won the whole thing with on one leg and a torn ACL.
Woods competed in the tournament despite his left leg not working properly. Going head-to-head with Rocco Mediate, a struggling Woods forced a play-off round on Monday. The then 14-time major winner kept his hopes of clinching another title alive by putting away a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th.
Steve Williams who served as his caddie warned him to not participate further. Things could have gone horribly wrong for Woods but he kept on fighting. “Stevie, f*** you, I’m winning this tournament,” Williams once recalled. The golfer appeared to have damaged his knee while making a play. However, Woods did not back down from the challenge.
Woods had entered this tournament after going knee surgery after the Masters. After the tournament Woods explained that he played through almost 91 holes on one leg. His determination and grit proved to be the major factor as he landed his 15th major championship. This win is considered by many as the greatest performance by a player.
