Did Tiger Woods turn down an ‘enormous’ offer to join LIV Golf?
Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods has been around the block for quite some time now. His stature in the world of golf is certainly unparalleled. But Tiger has struggled a bit in the past decade or so regarding his personal and professional life, but when put into perspective, his contribution to golf can be compared to that of Arnold Palmer from more than half a century ago.
Change is constant and Tiger seems to have no problem with it. He has ended up trying new things and embraced innovation throughout his illustrious career. Although when it comes down to grassroots, Woods is considered old school. Even with LIV Golf‘s inception and sudden rise, Tiger hasn’t waived off a bit from the more traditional PGA Tour and continues backing it whenever he gets a chance.
The tussle between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour has been going on ever since the former’s inception. LIV has poached some top players from PGA in the form of Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson who have gone on to be LIV’s poster boys and have severed their good terms with the PGA by publicly singing in LIV’s favor. Tiger however has held onto his belief thus continuing to side with the PGA Tour.
Even a country’s sovereign fund couldn’t wither Tiger Woods
One must wonder how much money would have LIV offered to Tiger Woods to convince him to join the controversial Saudi PIF-backed golf circuit which has taken the golfing world by storm. If we are to believe LIV’s CEO Greg Norman’s words on the matter, Tiger reportedly refused an “enormous” offer to join.
A deal of this magnitude certainly would have a no. of moving cogs. Tiger, who has a net worth of $1.7 billion according to Forbes has made his way around $121 million in his career. Unpopular opinion on the internet is that LIV would have at least offered a sum in and around the range of $1 billion just in case they don’t lose out on signing golf’s greatest superstar because of money.
Whether the exact details of the case will ever see the light of day seem a rare possibility, but one thing is for sure that if it had been executed then LIV’s future prospects would’ve taken shape in a much positive manner. When asked about his view on joining LIV Golf, Tiger immediately denied the possibility and reaffirmed his allegiance to the PGA. Tiger said – “That’s where my legacy is”. Thus credit must be given to Tiger who stood firm on his words even after he was offered a mammoth deal .
