Veteran golfer Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the ongoing PGA Championship after posting his worst score in the event on Saturday. Tiger, who was in his second start after a car crash 15 months ago which nearly cost him his right leg, carded a nine-over 79 at Southern Hills Championship Course.

The 15-time Majors champion appeared dejected in pain as he trudged off the 18th green and officially announced his withdrawal about five hours after his finish. The last time Woods withdrew from a tournament was in 2019 before the second round of the Northern Trust. Meanwhile, it’s also the first time the legendary Californian golfer has withdrawn from a major since the U.S. Open back in 1995.

Tiger Woods has informed us that he is withdrawing from the 2022 PGA Championship,” PGA of America president Jim Richerson said, as quoted by ESPN.com. “We admire Tiger’s valiant effort to compete here at Southern Hills and wish him the best as he continues to recover from his injuries.”

You know, he’s such a phenomenal player,” said South Africa’s Shaun Norris, who played with Woods on Saturday and shot a 4-over 74. “You feel sorry for him having to go through this. But then again, you also see the type of person he is, that he grinds through everything and he pushes himself through all of the pain. It’s not easy to see a guy like him have to go through that and struggle like that.”
