“I can enjoy this victory”: Scottie Scheffler creates history, wins first Major at the Masters; Tiger Woods walks away in 47th
Scottie Scheffler wins the Masters
The 2022 Masters came to an end in a triumphant way, with several memorable moments marking the four days of the game. It was Scottie Scheffler who walked away victorious however, as he took his first green jacket.
Scheffler fired one last one-under-par 71 in order to finish 72 holes on 10-under. In the process he defeated four time Major champion Rory McIlroy by three strokes. Australian golfer Cameron Smith and Irish golfer Shane Lowry shared joint third place at 283. “It was a long day, a tough day for me. I just tried to keep my head down an execute my shots,” said Scheffler.
It was a big victory for Scheffler, who won his first PGA title only in February. “I didn’t want to break my concentration,” Scheffler said according to TOI. “The minute I did was on 18 green, when I finally got there I had a five point lead and was like ‘Alright now I can enjoy this.'”
Scottie Scheffler walks away with $2.7 Million after grand Win; Tiger Woods hobbles away in 47th after brave performance
The 25-year-old American golfer took away $2.7 million as prize money from a $15 million kitty. He also sealed his place as the only player other than Ian Woosnam to win majors in their debut events as world no. 1. He is also only the fifth player to win the Masters while being atop the world rankings.
Woods on the other hand made a successful comeback at the Master, after being out for over a year due to a car crash that led to leg injuries. Although he ended the Masters in 47th place, his career worst performance, one must accredit him with his bravery. Woods continued to play despite facing health issues and pain in his leg.
“I wasn’t playing my best but to have their support out there, I don’t think words can describe it. Given where I was a little over a year ago and what my prospects were, to end up here and to be able to play in all four rounds, even a month ago, I didn’t know if I could pull this off,” concluded Woods.
