“was booked to absolute perfection”- Gunther escapes a massive upset against Jey Uso at Saturday Night’s Main Event to retain world title; WWE fans react
In yet another successful world title defense, Gunther put Jey Uso away. However, he would've skipped a beat or two with how close Uso came.

Gunther marched into Saturday Night’s Main Event as a heavy favorite against Jey Uso and he proved why. The Austrian decked Uso on the side of his head with a boot as soon as the bell rang. After that, the champ rained down on the challenger with some of his patented knife-edged chops, but the latter would fight back. Having developed the welts on his chest, Uso had to find a way out.
Midway through the bout, The Yeet Master delivered a Samoan Drop on Gunther hoping to capitalize. However, as he was measuring The Ring General, the latter responded with a Tyrannosaurus-like dropkick and followed up with a powerbomb. The match picked up pace at the tail end, as both men were mugging each other.
During the closing moments, the Imperium leader survived two insanely close pinfall attempts by the tag team specialist. The packed house in San Antonio was all but convinced that the Austrian was done for. But somehow, the champ powered out. He then caught the former Right Hand Man in a series of powerbombs to retain the world title.
After that grueling main event, it seemed as if Jey Uso had earned Gunther’s respect. For weeks, the 37-year-old kept berating the Anoa’i clan grappler for desecrating pro wrestling with sports entertainment. Jey stepped into the ring at SNME with a chip on his shoulder. He had something to prove. Even though the odds were against Uso, he rallied through on the back of a 15,000-strong house in Texas.
Despite being denied a shot at history, The Yeet Master has no reason to hold his head down. Next Saturday, he has a golden opportunity to punch his ticket to WrestleMania. Uso is set to enter the 30-man Royal Rumble match in a field of superstars including Roman Reigns, John Cena, CM Punk, Drew McIntyre, and more.
Fans recap an overwhelming Gunther vs. Jey Uso world title bout at SNME
Jey Uso wasn’t a prime choice to dethrone Gunther. However, he still took the gauntlet to The Ring General. Last year, Jey won his first singles title beating Bron Breakker. He came oh-so-close to repeating those exploits on Saturday.
Hailing the effort Uso put in against the brick wall Gunther is, the netizens were impressed. But they didn’t seem to like the result of it. Nonetheless, some argued that even if Jey were to win, it wouldn’t be on a TV special like Saturday Night’s Main Event but a PLE.
This begs the question of where things would go next. The World Champion is up and running. Gunther’s closing in on five months with that title resting around his waist. A previous report suggested that WWE has discussed pitting Logan Paul against him at WrestleMania 41.
