“I just went out there and enjoyed it”: Olympic Champion Suni Lee leads Auburn to NCAA finals

Suni Lee

Suni Lee has made quite the impact on gymnastics over the last year, as she took the individual all around title at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. After, she shifted her focus to collegiate gymnastics and has found even more success since.

Suni took a historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, and became the first all around gold medal winner to shift to collegiate gymnastics. She found her place at the Auburn University, leading the Tigers team. The 19-year-old still felt the jitters before the NCAA finals, yet she successfully carried her team through the event.

Lee helped the Auburn reach the finals for just the second time since 1993 as the Tigers finished second to Florida in the second semifinal to qualify for Saturday’s final four.

After getting a pep talk from her former teammate Jordan Chiles, Lee went out and felt the pressure go away, and allowed her to have fun instead. “I think (after that) I really took the pressure off of myself and I just went out there and enjoyed it,” said Lee to dailyunion.com.

Lee revelled in victory as her spectacular uneven bars routine pushed the team over into the finals. “I’m really proud of us,” Lee said. Lee is expected to return to competitive gymnastics as she aims to prepare for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
