Star India opener Rohit Sharma’s name went missing from the recently announced squad for the Australia tour. Rohit was not picked due to a hamstring injury that he picked during the IPL 2020 game against Delhi Capitals.

Team India head coach Ravi Shastri revealed the reason behind not picking Rohit for the much-awaited mega-series.

“It’s being handled by the people in charge of the medical part of it. We don’t get involved in that. They have submitted a report to the selectors and they have gone about their business,” said Shastri during a show ‘Frankly Speaking with Navika Kumar’ on Times Now.

“I have no say neither I am a part of the selection committee. All I know is the medical report which says he could be in danger of injuring himself again,” he added.

BCCI medical team to assess Rohit Sharma’s fitness today

A Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) functionary confirmed that the Mumbai Indians skipper will be assessed on Sunday. The area of focus would be to foresee the progress (if any) on his injury.

“Rohit will be assessed tomorrow, and a call will be taken after that on whether he is good to go. As is the case with hamstring injuries, the real challenge is the sprints and the acceleration and deceleration process will be the focus to understand if he has recovered fully or will need a little more time,” the functionary said.

“The hamstring muscles come into play when a person needs to suddenly run a quick single or needs to stop fast and turn at the non-striker’s end for a double. While you accelerate at the beginning of the sprint, you decelerate when you need to stop and turn. This is when the focus is 100 per cent on the functionality of the hamstring muscles. So, if you have recovered completely, you wouldn’t have an issue in either acceleration or deceleration,” he further explained.
