“He hurt Tom Brady.” Skip Bayless blames Bill Belichick for the quarterback not mentioning the Patriots in his retirement post
After the confusion earlier this week, Tom Brady has now officially retired from the NFL. The future Hall of Famer confirmed his decision through an Instagram post.
In that post, Brady specifically thanked multiple people in Tampa including his coaches, teammates, Buccaneers’ staff members, and their owners as well as his agent and family. However, not a single word was about his time with the Patriots or with his head coach Bill Belichick. Skip Bayless has an idea for why Brady specifically chose to do so.

Skip Bayless calls out Bill Belichick for not getting closer to Tom Brady
In a segment of Fox Sport’s ‘Undisputed’ Skip Bayless commented on Tom Brady’s retirement post saying “In offseasons when he(Brady) would stay in the Boston area, Belichik would never reach out and want to do anything socially at all. Wouldn’t even want to play a round of golf just to get to know each other better. And that hurt Tom Brady because they had little to no personal relationship.”
About why Belichick wouldn’t have those personal relationships with players, Bayless said “He is arm’s length with everybody because he’s the commanding officer and no way is gonna stoop down and have personal relationships with players that might interfere with his ability to make cold-blooded decisions.”
Bayless further added “What was the first tipping point? It was deflate-gate. That’s when this issue reared its ugly head. Bill called a press conference before playing Seattle in the Super Bowl and he said don’t ask me, ask my quarterback. Ask him as in, it’s his fault. That had to be the beginning of the end.”
Many people were expecting at least some mention of the Patriots by Tom Brady in his retirement post but there was nothing at all. To the media, it seemed as though Brady and Belichick were ok but of course, we know that Robert Kraft kept Brady in New England when Belichick wanted to move on to Jimmy Garoppolo.
There may be a decent amount of truth to Bayless’ argument but it’s worth noting that when Brady left New England for Tampa Bay last in 2020, he did make a post thanking everyone in the Patriot’s organization so, it’s possible that Brady just didn’t feel the need to say the same things once again.
