Over the past 8 years, Lewis Hamilton has proven to be one of the best in F1 after winning 6 World Championships and helping Mercedes win all the constructor’s championships since 2014. He has been dominating his teammates as well, except for once in 2016 and 2021, and has managed to win all the World Championships against Nico Rosberg and Valtteri Bottas. After Mercedes having George Russell in the team with Hamilton this year, it was doubted if Russell would be able to keep up with the other Briton, but things took a rather unlikely turn after Russell managed to finish better than Hamilton in all races but one.

After Mercedes lost their dominance in the sport after the start of this season, Lewis Hamilton hasn’t been able to score a single podium other than the one in Bahrain, whereas Russell has scored 3 in the same car. All of this follows up after the final race of the 2021 season, after Hamilton lost the championship battle with Max Verstappen in Abu Dhabi after an extremely controversial race. Many have thought that the race had an impact on the Briton and that could be the reason he is underperforming this year, but Toto Wolff thinks otherwise.

Wolff denies any decline in Lewis Hamilton’s performance

Even though Lewis Hamilton has been underperforming way too much relative to Russell in the same car, team principal Toto Wolff denies that there has been any decline in his performance after the race in Abu Dhabi last year. He also stated that both the drivers appear to him “very professionally,” and that one cannot have a pattern while saying “George is outperforming Hamilton.”

“They have been given a car that is a bit sub-par, each of them tries to develop the car further, they have both gone [in] a different set-up direction, Lewis [in Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying] again very experimental, but can be available in the long term,” said the Austrian, as PlanetF1 quoted.

After an experimental setup for the team at Baku, Hamilton managed to finish P4, right behind Russell, but at the same time the car’s porpoising had some adverse effect over the Briton’s back; so worse that he had been speculated to miss the Canadian Grand Prix. Hamilton stands 6th in the championship with 62 points, Russell is 2 places ahead of him in 4th with 99 points.
