The Indian hockey teams put their nation on the global map yet again with a tremendous performance at the Tokyo Olympics. The warriors in blue made it to the top four at the quadrennial event for the first time in over four decades. While the men’s team bagged a medal, it was the women’s team who had the whole nation hooked to their TV sets.
The women in blue made it to the semifinals for the first time in the history of the Olympic Games. While they failed to bag a podium finish, the Indian women’s team won the country’s respect and admiration with their gritty performance. Their bronze medal game against Great Britain 311.3 million viewing minutes according to Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC).
On the other hand, the men’s hockey team’s clash against Germany which saw them win the nation’s first Olympic medal in the sport in over four decades recorded 260.9 million viewing points. The Indian men’s hockey team defeated Germany to notch up their first-ever podium finish at the Olympics in 41 years.
Table tennis pips badminton at Tokyo 2020 as Hockey takes top spot in viewership charts
At the Tokyo Olympics, hockey grabbed a strong viewership share with 15.2 per cent, followed by table tennis with 13.7 per cent, badminton with 12.3 per cent, and boxing with a 12.2 per cent share. The opening week of the Tokyo Olympics had clocked a record 6.9 million viewers and 5.8 billion viewing minutes.
Among the Indian states, the northeast topped charts by a huge margin. Assam/North East contributed an overall share of 27.7 per cent, followed by a distant second Maharashtra/Goa with 11.5 per cent share. Tamil Nadu/Pondicherry came third with 8.8 per cent viewership share, followed by Uttar Pradesh/Uttarakhand with 6.3 per cent. Kerala was in the fifth spot with 5.8 per cent.
The Indian contingent for the Olympics made a strong showing by bringing home seven medals including one gold, two silver and four bronze. The athletes who won medals at the recently concluded games included gold medallist, Neeraj Chopra, while Mirabai Chanu, Ravi Kumar Dhahiya bagged the silver medal as PV Sindhu, Lovlina Borgohain, and Bajrang Punia and the men’s hockey team clinched bronze.
