There have been a few blockbuster moves just a few weeks into the offseason, but one move that has fallen under the radar was the trade of LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves. It was a move that came out of nowhere as the Charlotte Hornets traded their franchise player after a promising 2025-26 campaign in terms of team results.
After a poor first half of the season, the Hornets led by Ball turned their season around since the beginning of 2026. While they failed to make it to the playoffs, their good run in 2026 saw them climb to ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 44-38 record. However, their season came to an end in the Play-In Tournament.
Following a promising end to the season, the Hornets have been active in the trade market so far. Hornets General Manager Jeff Peterson explained why the team traded star point guard Ball to the Timberwolves.
Getting Naz Reid when you can get a player of his caliber. And of course, the draft capital and the flexibility just felt like it was something that was able to achieve multiple goals in one transaction.

When the Hornets drafted LaMelo Ball as the third pick in the 2020 NBA draft, it looked like the club had finally landed a player capable of leading the franchise for years to come. While the early signs were promising, injuries and lack of consistency seemed to take a toll on the youngest of the Ball brothers.
In the end, the Hornets decided it was time to part ways with the 24-year-old and take a different approach. The move to the Wolves sees him join forces with the number one pick of his draft, Anthony Edwards.
It looks like the trade worked out for both parties as Ball will be in a team with championship aspirations, while the Hornets continue to build their roster to contend in the future.
What will LaMelo Ball bring to the Minnesota Timberwolves?
It will be interesting to see how the backcourt duo of Ball and Edwards work out for the Timberwolves in the upcoming season. After consecutive Western Conference Finals appearances in 2024 and 2025, the Wolves were beaten by the San Antonio Spurs in the second round this year.

Following the defeat, it was clear that changes were needed to help Edwards take them on all the way. Wolves head coach, Chris Finch, spoke about the addition of a player like Ball in the team.
It is a little too early to tell. We will have to tinker a bit. I think you just put the ball in LaMelo’s hands early and just trust him to make the right play, he’s got a proven history of that. He can help unlock Rudy (Gobert) a bit more. The particulars I haven’t drilled too deep on that right now.

The Wolves are only one of the five teams in the league to never make it to the Finals. With Ball and Edwards together, Finch will need to find a way to get the best out of both players as they look to contend for the title next year.
Draymond Green on LaMelo Ball joining Anthony Edwards in Minnesota
The pairing of Ball and Edwards will bring in a lot of excitement to the city of Minnesota. After taking some tips from Michael Jordan in the offseason last year, Edwards elevated his game and posted career-high scoring numbers last season.
With a player like Edwards by his side, Ball will have a teammate who can score at will and can tear defenses apart.
Four-time NBA champion Draymond Green revealed that he is excited to see the two young stars playing side by side next season.
You can’t deny that level of talent man Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball together. It’s going to be must watch tv… I like this move, I think ultimately it’s going to be some growing pains.

It is going to be interesting to see how far the Wolves will go after their big move for Ball. There is no denying that the talent in the team is very high. The front office will hope that the bold move will pay off heading forward.
