“I prefer to be the minister of attack,” Sergio Perez isn’t a big fan of the nickname that he got for his heroics in Abu Dhabi 2021
Sergio Perez finished P3 at the Mexican Grand Prix
Mexican maestro Sergio Perez shocked the world during F1’s season finale at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix where all hell broke loose. The two gladiators, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton entered the race weekend being level on points. It was clear that whoever finished ahead on Sunday would be deemed as world champion. A lot was at stake for this race.
During the early parts of the grand prix, it was clear that Lewis Hamilton had the pace to leave the others behind and charge onto his beloved trophy. However Red Bull wasn’t gonna let the 7 time world champion get his 8th so easily. Sergio Perez was ready to give it his all for the team. What happened further on was the Mexican defending like a beast.
After gaining a 10 second lead to Max Verstappen, Lewis was met with his worst nightmare in the likes of Perez who defended his position like his life depended on it. What followed was the British driver’s 10 second lead turning into a mere 2 second gap to Verstappen. For these heroics in Yas Marina, Sergio Perez was named as the ‘Mexican Minister of Defence’. However it seems like the Red Bull driver isn’t very pleased with this nickname.
Sergio Perez would prefer to be known as the Minister of Attack
In an interview with Red Bull, the Mexican went on to talk about why he should be the ‘Minister of Attack’. The Red Bull driver laughed and said this. “I prefer to be the minister of attack.” He then gave his reasoning. “I really think I drive fairly. Of course I’m aggressive in the race, but I never just throw the door without pardon. I think you can definitely race wheel-to-wheel with me, which is quite nice. There are very few drivers with whom you can do that.”
The multiple race winner further went on to talk about his team and how he couldn’t have gotten a better teammate than Max Verstappen. “The team is really very strong. This is a fantastic racing team where everyone works together. In terms of mentality, everything is focused on victory, on the next big goal. That’s really impressive,” he continued.
The 2022 season was dominated by Red Bull racing on a level that was almost unpredictable. With Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez joining forces for the second time, the team went on to grab the driver’s and constructor’s world championship trophies and made history. The Mexican on the other hand will be keen on challenging drive no.1 next year to take the title off his hands.
