“I sincerely hope we can see him play another time” Novak Djokovic says Roger Federer is the “Icon of Tennis”

The current world no. 1 Novak Djokovic spoke about his longtime rival and former world no. 1 Roger Federer in a recent interview. The Serb was asked about Federer after the latter’s interview with the Tribune de Genève surfaced. In the interview, Federer had said that he has undergone a major operation, the recovery period of which is quite long. He also offered no guarantees about the upcoming season, saying he might be lucky to play at Wimbledon, an event he has won 8 times.
Novak Djokovic, who is in Italy right now, playing in the 2021 ATP Finals, was asked to comment on Roger Federer’s injury and a potential comeback.

Despite their famous rivalry, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have always been very respectful of each other’s achievements. On being asked about Federer, Djokovic was quick to point out Roger’s importance to the sport and said he hoped to see the Swiss legend back again.
“Obviously Roger is an icon of our sport and people around the world love him. They love watching him play, love seeing him around. He’s very important for our sport on and off the court. So for the sake of our sport, I sincerely hope that we can see him play at least another time” he said.

Highlighting Roger Federer‘s pertinence to tennis, Novak Djokovic said that the Swiss icon deserves a proper adieu. “I’m sure he doesn’t want to end his career this way. I think he’s gonna definitely try to give it a last push, a last try. I’m not sure what his injury is, and I know he’s been struggling with a knee for quite a few years. So yeah, let’s see. I think for everything that he has achieved and created for this sport, he deserves to play and he deserves to have a proper farewell” Djokovic added.
