The Indian men’s 4x400m relay team improved its chances of meeting the automatic qualification criteria of the Tokyo Olympics with an incredible effort of 3:01.89 in the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Patiala on Friday

The team of Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Arokia Rajiv, and Noah Nirmal Tom stepped on the field with the goal of bettering their performance. The team had clocked 3:02.61 in the Indian Grand Prix 4 on Monday.

The Indian men’s 4x400m relay team might reach Olympic mark

The Indian men’s 4x400m relay team had clocked 3:02.59 in Turkey in 2019. But that timing had left it in the 16th place in the rankings.

The team showed considerable progress in their timing at the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Patiala on Friday. Their performance of 3:01.89 pushed them from the 16th spot to the 13th in the Road to Tokyo rankings by World Athletics. The team is the fastest non-qualifier.

Among the quota of 16 teams, 12 countries have already qualified for the Games through the 2019 Doha World Athletics Championships and 2021 World Athletics Relays. 4 more qualifying teams based on the World Athletics Ranking List are yet to be officially announced. The qualification deadline is June 29, 2021. All eyes will be on the qualification announcements now.
