Mayank Agarwal celebrates after clinching victory in the Super Over

The Indian Premier League witnessed a rare occurrence when two matches ended in a tie and went to a Super Over on the same day. In fact, there were three Super Over as the second game saw the Super Over getting tied as well. The first of these matches was Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) versus Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Put in to bat, KKR scored 163 courtesy explosive hitting from Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik. After a brisk start, the SRH chase derailed and in the end the equation was down to 18 runs required off one over bowled by Andre Russell. Despite hitting three boundaries, skipper David Warner could not take his side home as the game ended in a tie. Lockie Ferguson emerged as the hero in the Super Over for KKR as he castled Warner and Abdul Samad for a score of just 2 runs which KKR chased down with ease.

If the drama in the first match wasn’t enough, the second game between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) was even more dramatic. Electing to bat first, MI scored 177 runs thanks to Kieron Pollard’s pyrotechnics. In the chase, KL Rahul played a fighting knock before getting out. The match ended in a tie when Chris Jordan was an inch short of competing a second run off the last ball.

The Super Over saw an excellent exhibition of bowling as Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami conceded just 5 runs apiece to take the game to another Super Over. In the second Super Over, MI scored 11 off Jordan’s over which KXIP chased down with easy thanks to Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal.

Yesterday was the first instance in IPL history when two games were tied on the same day. However, in T20s, this has happened a total of 5 times (including yesterday).

Other instances of 2 matches getting tied on the same day

The first instance of 2 T20 matches going to a Super Over on the same day happened in 2009 in the South African Pro T20 series. And both games were semi-finals! The second instance was in 2011 in the English Friends Life T20 tournament. The third was in 2018 in the Sri Lankan SLC Tournament while the fourth in 2019 was in the South African CSA T20 tournament.

Although, the first instance in 2009 comes close to matching the 5th such instances i.e. in the IPL yesterday because of the fact that it was in the semi-finals, the sheer thrill and intensity of yesterday’s IPL action will forever remain unrivalled.
