IPL 2020: David Warner breaks Virat Kohli’s record to become fastest to 5000 IPL runs
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain David Warner became the fastest players to score 5000 runs in the Indian Premier League on Sunday. The Australian batsman achieved the feat during SRH’s loss against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a Super Over at Abu Dhabi.
Warner was in the limelight throughout the course of yesterday’s match. Firstly, his decision to bowl first was deemed bizarre. And then his decision to demote himself down the order raised eyebrows. However, he came good with the bat to tie the game for his side and take the match to a Super Over. In the Super Over however, he fell prey to Lockie Ferguson‘s stupendous yorkers. KKR eased past SRH in the Super Over to solidify the 4th spot on the points table.
Warner reaches 5000 runs
During his unbeaten knock of 47 against KKR, Warner crossed the remarkable feat of 5000 IPL runs. To add to the impressiveness, he was the fastest to do so as he took a whopping 22 matches fewer than the previous fastest batter Virat Kohli. Warner took just 135 games while Kohli took 157.
The other two batsmen to have crossed 5000 runs are Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma. The former crossed the mark in 173 games while the latter took 187. Warner is also the only overseas player on the list. There is also a 5th cricketer who is about to join the list. Shikhar Dhawan is just 62 runs short of the 5000 run mark. He will in all likelihood be able to reach it in this year’s IPL. The 5 players apart from Dhawan who have crossed the 4000 run mark are AB de Villiers, MS Dhoni, Chris Gayle, Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir.
