IPL 2020: ‘I should have sacrificed my wicket for Surya’ – Rohit Sharma talks about Suryakumar Yadav’s run-out

Mumbai Indians (MI) won their 5th Indian Premier League (IPL) title following a clinical win over Delhi Capitals (DC) that saw match-winning performances from Trent Boult and Rohit Sharma.

Having reached their first IPL final, DC had won the toss and opted to bat first. MI’s Trent Boult however, ripped through the DC top order to leave them reeling at 22-3. But, DC skipper Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant rescued the innings and took DC to a competitive score of 156.

In the chase, MI came in with a positive mindset and started off in explosive fashion. Quinton de Kock led the way in the beginning and after his departure Rohit Sharma played the role of the aggressor to score a half-century. Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan contributed some runs too, to lead MI to an easy win in the final.

Horrible mix-up between Rohit and Surya

In the second innings when MI were cruising at 90/2 in 10.4 overs, DC were given a mild ray of hope when Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma were involved in a huge mix-up that led to the former being run-out. Rohit punched this one off the backfoot off the fifth ball of the 11th over and took off for the run. Rohit screamed for Yadav to run but the latter was adamant that there was no run. In the end, the throws went to the striker’s end to get Rohit out but Yadav strayed out of the crease on purpose to sacrifice himself for his skipper.

Speaking about Yadav’s wicket after the match, Rohit said, “The kind of form he was in, I should have sacrificed my wicket for Surya.” The MI skipper was also all praise for Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan’s contributions to MI’s title triumph. He said, “We made sure Ishan and Surya had confidence – just have to let Ishan loose, and Surya is a more matured player.”
