Delhi Capitals (DC) were defeated by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by a big 59 runs margin in IPL 2020. KKR bounced back from a disappointing defeat versus RCB where they could make just 84 runs.

KKR’s success in the game was a total team dominance as Nitish Rana smashed his second fifty of the tournament, while Varun Chakravarthy took five wickets for 20 runs.

DC won the toss and decided to field first at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. KKR adjusted the opening lineup as Nitish Rana was given the job to open the innings with Shubman Gill. Gill threw his wicket away after scoring two boundaries for 9 runs. Rahul Tripathi also couldn’t do much and was out on a fierce Yorker by Anrich Nortje. Dinesh Karthik also followed the other two batsmen and was out for 3 runs.

Sunil Narine and Nitish Rana

Sunil Narine then walked in after missing action due to suspected bowling action. Narine alongside Rana started at 42/3 when KKR looked to be in trouble. However, the duo partnered for 115 runs and took KKR to a more than par score. Nitish Rana made 81 from 53 balls with 13 boundaries and one six, while Narine made 64 from just 32 balls with 6 fours and 4 sixes. KKR were able to grind 194/6 after skipper Eoin Morgan’s good finish in the last two overs.

Nortje and Rabada took two wickets each after conceding 27 and 33 runs respectively. Ashwin was expensive for 35 in three overs as was Tushar Deshpande for 40 runs in four overs.

Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals dropped Prithvi Shaw for Ajinkya Rahane, but the latter was out for a golden duck on the very first ball of the innings. The man in form Shikhar Dhawan was out this time after two back to back centuries in IPL 2020.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant tried to get DC on the path of the run-chase. Rishabh Pant changed his aggressive approach and played an unusual inning of 27 runs off 33 balls. Iyer made 47 from 38 balls after being dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy. Shimron Hetmayer made 10 runs and a flurry of wickets followed in the game as DC’s chase looked impossible in the last four overs.

Varun Chakravarthy was the star performer for KKR with his first five-wicket haul in IPL. This is the second-best bowling performance by a KKR bowler in IPL history. He took 5/20 in four overs while Pat Cummins also proved his worth with a 4-0-17-3 bowling display.

This is the 6th win of IPL 2020 for KKR as they remain stable in the fourth position in the points table. DC on the other hand have done well to get 7 wins in 11 games of the tournament but the second loss in a row keeps them away from the top spot. They are in the second position with 14 points.
