IPL 2020: MS Dhoni set to become first player to play 200 matches in IPL
MS Dhoni is all set to make history when he takes the field against Rajasthan Royals at Abu Dhabi. The 39-year-old has 199 IPL caps and is just one cap short of the 200-mark which nobody has touched. The former Indian captain joined the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2008 and has led them in every IPL game that he has been a part of.
When the CSK franchise was banned for a period of two years, Dhoni was a part of the Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS). He was the captain of the Pune franchise in 2016 but was replaced by Steve Smith in 2017.
As a captain of the CSK franchise, Dhoni has led them to the playoffs of the IPL every year. In the 200 matches he has been a part of, he has scored 4568 runs in total. He has been the captain in 183 matches out of the 200.
Rohit to join 200-club soon
MS Dhoni is followed by Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma on the list of most capped IPL players. The MI captain has 197 caps and if MI qualify for playoffs and CSK don’t, Rohit has a chance to to equal or even overtake Dhoni.
Suresh Raina comes in third at 193 caps. He would have become the first player to 200 caps had he not pulled out of this year’s IPL. Dinesh Karthik, with 191 IPL caps, is another player who can play 200 IPL matches in the ongoing season.
These are the players with the most caps in IPL history:
Player | Matches |
MS Dhoni | 200* |
Rohit Sharma | 197 |
Suresh Raina | 193 |
Dinesh Karthik | 191 |
