Delhi Capitals (DC) head-coach Ricky Ponting looked back at his side’s Indian Premier League season and expressed pride at the way they had performed. DC lost in the IPL final against Mumbai Indians (MI) that saw the latter clinch their 5th IPL trophy.

On the day of the final, the Ponting-coached DC had won the toss and chosen to bat first. However, Trent Boult breathed fire for MI and troubled the DC batting to reduce DC to 22-3 in 3.3 overs. Despite Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant scoring half-centuries to take their side to 156, the score did not prove to be enough in the end.

In the chase, MI were on top from the beginning. Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma got MI off to an great start. After de Kock got out to Stoinis, Rohit stitched together a good partnership with Suryakumar Yadav and the two seemed to be taking MI to an easy win. After the duo’s wickets, Ishan Kishan ensured there was no nerves to guide his side to an easy win.

Speaking at the post-match presentation after the IPL final, Ricky Ponting credited MI for their title triumph, spoke about DC’s season and also expressed pride in the way DC played throughout the season. “MI have been the best team, they’ve beaten us 4 times. Being coach it’s a little frustrating in the dugout but at the end of the day I’m really proud of the job the boys have done,” Ponting said.

Speaking about captain Shreyas Iyer, Ponting said, “Iyer is a brilliant player, captain and person. He’s definitely grown in stature in the last 12 months. Hopefully we can work together a bit more in the future.”

“We probably had 3.5 weeks of prep before the tournament, so we had a little too much preparation. We had a really challenging tour, I was skeptical about leaving Australia but the organizers have done a terrific job. I think we have the youngest squad in the tournament and I’m extremely proud of them,” the Australian signed off.
