Packed with a mix of talented Indians as well as overseas players, Delhi Capitals was counted amongst the strongest sides in the initials years of IPL. They qualified for the playoffs in the first couple of seasons. However, below-par performances in the following years meant Delhi Capitals got the tag of being an under-achiever in the tournament’s history.
After a gap of six years, Delhi Capitals, under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, made their way into the playoffs in 2019. They put on a stellar show last year and would be hoping to clinch their maiden IPL title in IPL 2020.
Delhi Capitals boasts of a strong batting line up, coupled with excellent all-rounders. The bowling attack, though, could prove to be a worry for them.
Here’s a look at the strongest playing XI of Delhi Capitals for the IPL 2020:
Openers: Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw
Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw form a solid opening pair for Delhi Capitals. Both enjoyed a stellar season last year and thus Delhi would not want to tinker the opening combination. Dhawan had a terrific season last year. He accumulated 521 runs in 16 matches at an average of 44.73. Shaw, on the other hand, amassed 353 runs in 16 games.
Middle Order: Shreyas Iyer, Shimron Hetmyer and Rishabh Pant
The addition of Shimron Hetmyer in the squad means Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant are likely to bat at number three and five respectively. The trio of Shimron Hetmyer, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant would make a solid middle-order for Delhi. Skipper Shreyas Iyer has been in a terrific form of-late. Pant, too would be rearing to dispatch the balls to all corners of the ground.
All-rounders: Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin
All-rounders like Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin would provide a great balance to the side. The trio makes sure that Delhi is well aided with all-rounders who could step up in case of a top-order collapse. Besides, all three would look to exploit with the ball in the spin-friendly conditions of UAE. Both Marcus Stoinis and Ravichandran Ashwin would be making their debut for Delhi Capitals this season.
Bowlers: Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ishant Sharma
Anrich Nortje has replaced Chris Woakes in Delhi Capital’s squad ahead of IPL 2020. Delhi capitals would look to exploit the pace of Nortje to bolster the pace attack, which includes the likes of Ishant Sharma and Kagiso Rabada. However, performing well in the tough conditions of the UAE could prove to be a challenge for them.
