Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer with IPL trophy
The 13th season of Indian Premier League (IPL) came as a treat in these tough times for all cricket fans. From splendid fielding efforts to some mind-blowing knocks, the tournament had everything to offer for everyone. However, it’s almost impossible to imagine an IPL season without any controversial moments, and this edition was also filled with such incidents. Here are the top 5 controversies from IPL 2020 that spiced up the things.
Suresh Raina’s sudden exit
The controversies started arising even before the players took the field. Mr IPL Suresh Raina pulled from IPL 2020 citing ‘personal reasons’. Later, the team management of Chennai Super Kings gave some weird statements about him. The franchise also terminated his contract during the season. Raina’s exit turned out to be a massive blow for CSK as they failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time.
DC vs KXIP: The short-run saga
Kings XI Punjab suffered one of the most unfortunate incidents of this season during their inaugural game against Delhi Capitals. Umpire Nitin Menon declared a short-run while KXIP batsman Chris Jordan was batting for his side. But the replay clearly showed that his bat was well inside the crease. The game went to the Super Over where Punjab suffered a crushing defeat. As a result, KXIP lost two crucial points and missed out on a playoff berth.

Anushka Sharma slammed Sunil Gavaskar
Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar received massive criticism for his commentary during the initial stage of the tournament. He made remarks about Virat Kohli’s unpreparedness due to the lockdown in the country. He took Kohli’s wife and Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma’s name as well. The latter took to social media to slam the commentator for his ‘disgraceful’ statement. The former Indian cricketer then cleared what he really meant at that time.
Wide or not: Umpire changes mind mid-way
Another controversial incident that took place in this year’s IPL involved the Chennai-based franchise. CSK skipper MS Dhoni lost his cool while umpire Paul Reifel was calling a ‘wide’ delivery bowled by Shardul Thakur during a game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Reifel stopped mid-way and changed his mind. The replay clearly showed that the ball was outside the tramline. SRH skipper David Warner also expressed his disappointment while sitting in the dugout.
Aakash Chopra and Jimmy Neesham exchanges words
Former Indian cricketer-turned commentator Aakash Chopra gave critical remarks on KXIP all-rounder Jimmy Neesham’s performance during the season. Chopra slammed Neesham, calling him ‘not a match-winner’. The Kiwi player took no time in retaliating on Twitter as he wrote: “Averaging 18.5 and striking at 90 doesn’t win many matches either.” Replying to him, Chopra tweeted, “Correct my friend. That’s why nobody picks me anymore. I get paid for doing something else. I’m glad that you don’t have an issue with my observations but with my cricket stats. Go well for the rest of the #IPL.”
