Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly expressed satisfaction and happiness with the way the Indian Premier League has and is being conducted in the UAE. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, questions and speculations were rife as to whether the IPL will take place or not. The BCCI with their efforts made it possible by shifting the tournament to September and also the UAE by holding players in a bio-bubble.

The tournament is now coming to an end with just two matches to go. Mumbai Indians are already in the final. They will face the winner of the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals. Following the IPL, India will travel to Australia for a tour that will take place from November to January.

‘A lot will depend on Kohli’s captaincy in Australia’ – Ganguly

Speaking about the success of the IPL to India Today, Sourav Ganguly said, “The world need sport, the world needed life to get back to normal. The entire BCCI team, not just thhe office-bearers, the employees and staff who work on the ground, they have been in Dubai for the last 2 and half months have pulled off a fantastic thing. The final is not finished yet but I think it was important for BCCI because the IPL is a huge asset for BCCI. From that point of view, we have pulled off a great thing.

The BCCI President then spoke of the Indian team and their prospects Down Under by saying that captain Virat Kohli holds the key “It’s about Virat, and I’m saying this as a player not as a BCCI President, it’s about Virat just working with them and getting them to be at their best. He has to decide as a captain, who he wants to attack with, who he wants to defend with. At which stage of the game he wants to attack with an Ashwin or a Bumrah or a Saini or a Sharma or a Jadeja. It’s his captaincy skill,” Ganguly said.

Ganguly also talked about Rohit Sharma who has been left out of the Indian squads. “I see a lot of reports going on saying ‘what’s the hurry, why is he been picked now, why somebody else has been picked?’. It doesn’t matter. If your best player is fit, he goes and plays.

Today if Virat Kohli says ‘I’m fit’ won’t it be stupid to leave him in Mumbai and not take him to Australia? As captains, coaches your itching that ‘this is my marquee series’ and I need him on the park. So you do everything to get him on the park. And BCCI will do everything to get Rohit on the park and see how it happens,” Ganguly stated.
